There is something truly special about waking up before the rest of the island and watching the sun rise over the ocean with the people you love most. Imagine beginning your morning barefoot on an Oʻahu beach, surrounded by your family and the soft glow of the rising sun. Your children running barefoot through the sand. Everyone laughing. The ocean sparkling.
Sunrise provides some of the most beautiful light for family photography. The early morning tends to feel peaceful and unhurried, and children have plenty of room to simply be themselves. There doesn't have to be a lot of posing. You can walk along the shoreline. Hold hands. Play in the sand. Snuggle your babies. Let the kids run.

After an early morning session, chances are everyone is going to be hungry. A stop at Koa Pancake House is the perfect way to refuel before continuing toward Oʻahu's famous North Shore. They offer local favorites and large portions at affordable prices. Be sure to try the Macadamia Nut Pancakes and the Guava Lava Mochi Waffles.
After your delicious breakfast, you can jump back in the car for a family road trip toward the North Shore. As you make your way up north, stop at Dole Plantation in Wahiawa. This is especially fun if you're traveling with children. Take a ride on the Pineapple Express train to see all of the country around the plantation. The train ride is one of the most popular family activities there along with the giant maze.
Don’t forget to try the famous Dole Whip while wandering through the plantation grounds, and then allow a little time to browse the gift shop for Hawaiian and pineapple-themed souvenirs. It's one of those stops that doesn't have to take up your entire day. Instead, it's a fun little piece of the adventure.
Continue north and you'll eventually arrive in one of my favorite places to wander around on the island: historic Haleʻiwa. Haleʻiwa has that wonderful North Shore charm—small shops, surf culture, colorful storefronts, local food trucks/restaurants, and plenty of places to wander into when something catches your eye.
One of my absolute favorite little stops is North Shore Goodies. Especially if you love coconut and peanut butter. Their peanut butter is seriously one of a kind. It makes a perfect gift from Hawai’i for those back home.
After exploring Haleʻiwa, stop by Blue Planet Surf to rent a kayak or paddle board and spend some time on the Anahulu River. It’s about a 20 minute paddle each way. The last time I went at dawn, I counted 28 turtles just on the way in. Paddling down the river is such a different experience from spending the morning at the beach. The pace is slower, the surroundings are lush and peaceful, and it's a wonderful way for the family to get outside together.
Next stop would be the famous Waimea Bay Beach or Waimea Valley. You will have to wait for parking at the beach and it’s kind of a trek down a sandy slope to the water but definitely worth it. You will find the iconic Waimea rock and if you’re feeling up to it, jump off into the water. I was 5 years old the first time I made the jump.
If you’d like a walk through an amazing botanical garden that leads to a waterfall instead, Waimea Valley is right across the street. There is a souvenir shop and small cafe, and a courtyard with a lot of free range peacocks. Beyond that is a guard shack and there is small fee to enter.
Now, it’s time to head back to Hale’iwa and ask yourselves coffee or shave ice? Honestly, I recommend both. Coffee for parents and shave ice for the kids. Island Vintage Coffee offers 100% Kona coffee at this absolutely delicious. Directly across from Island Vintage is the quintessentially Hawaiian Matsumoto Shave Ice.
Matsumoto's has been serving shave ice in Haleʻiwa, since 1951, and remains one of the North Shore's most iconic family stops. There is something about standing in line with the kids, letting everyone pick their favorite flavors, and walking back outside with a brightly colored cup of shave ice. It's vacation happiness in a cup.
Eventually, the sun will begin to lower over the North Shore. The kids will probably be tired. You'll have sandy feet, wet swimsuits, a few souvenirs in the car, and probably some leftover peanut butter and shave ice memories. And you'll realize that your sunrise photography session wasn't just a photo shoot. It was the beginning of one of your family's favorite days in Hawaiʻi.
That's what I love most about photographing families on Oʻahu. I don't want your photography session to feel like an appointment you have to squeeze into your vacation. I want it to be part of the experience. Wake up early, watch the sunrise, hold your babies close, laugh together, create beautiful photographs. Then go explore the island because someday, your children won't remember everything but they may remember eating pineapple Dole Whip, or picking out a souvenir in Haleʻiwa, or paddling down the river with Mom and Dad. And when they're grown, they'll have photographs that take them right back to that morning. That is the real gift of family photography. Not just beautiful pictures, beautiful memories, preserved forever.
